Brushing

Keep your synthetic turf tidy by brushing the fibres regularly to stay on top of any dirt or debris build up. Use a rake or a broom to redistribute the fibres evenly across the lawn. Doing this once a week will help the artificial grass wear more evenly and help it to last longer, particularly if some areas get more traffic than others.

Remove debris

It’s a good idea to remove debris from your instant turf every now and then. Debris such as leaves, twigs from overhanging branches or rubbish from general use, can build up over time if not tended to regularly. This may encourage weed growth, which may affect drainage, damaging the turf over time. Use a brush or do it by hand regularly, or use a leaf blower if there is a lot of debris.

If it’s been a dry season, it’s a good idea to hose down your instant turf to rinse out dust and other organic matter that has dried on to the fibres. If you or your family are prone to allergies, a regular hose down during allergy season will ensure that there’s no pollen build up.

Add sand if needed

Over time, you may need to top up on sand, particularly through high-traffic areas. It’s important that the sand is evenly distributed throughout the lawn to ensure the artificial grass fibres stays in a vertical position, this will help your turf to last longer.

Keep an eye on animals

The family pooch will probably try to do its business on the synthetic turf, but don’t worry. Just make sure you collect any droppings and wash off urine with warm water and a little detergent, or equal parts water and white vinegar for a chemical-free deodoriser and bacteria killer. Fortunately, synthetic fibres will not be damaged by your pet’s droppings, just take care when cleaning fibres and make sure you use pet-friendly products.

Remove stains

Good news, synthetic turf is relatively resistant to staining – within reason of course. If you happen to spill tough-to-clean liquids such as cooking oil, grease, sugary drinks, wine or blood, it’s a good idea to rinse the fibres as soon as you can to prevent discolouration. Use a little detergent if you have trouble getting the marks out, but make sure you rinse the soapy water thoroughly to prevent damage to the artificial fibres.
