The new Acute Services Building at Flinders Medical Centre is part of SA Health’s multi-year Southern Redevelopment – Stage 1 program, delivering additional medical facilities to hospitals across the southern suburbs of Adelaide. Scheduled for completion in 2028, the seven-storey facility will provide the health campus with an additional 98 clinical spaces, expanding the hospital’s capacity to deliver specialist care.

Requirement

As mandated, protection from concealed termite entry was required on the project to ensure compliance with the Australian Standard for Termite Management (AS 3660.1) and provisions outlined for termite risk management in the National Construction Code.

Our industry leading Pledge Guarantee warranty, which complements every Termimesh System installation, was the key feature that secured the system’s inclusion within the project. The termite management specification stipulated warranty terms must provide unlimited value and a minimum coverage period of ten years for both materials and workmanship, making Termimesh the only meaningful choice.

Termimesh’s inclusion in this project marks the third occasion on which the system has been specified and installed within the ongoing redevelopment works of the health campus, with the system also being installed in the nearby Health and Medical Research Building constructed for Flinders University.

Approach

Working closely with the Built Environs team, supplied architectural plans were precisely marked up to identify all areas requiring protection from concealed termite entry, with an accurate assessment of the quantity surveying requirements of Termimesh, Termiflanges and Termiparge being provided by our estimating team.

Early engagement and ongoing communication with the Built Environs team throughout the tender and delivery phases supported the successful execution of the works and strengthened the rapport between both parties throughout the project.

In total, certified Termimesh technicians installed over 800 lineal metres of TMA725 stainless steel termite barrier mesh to all perimeters, cold joints and construction joints. To prevent termite ingress through expansion gaps arising from singular and clustered electrical and hydraulic penetrations, 335 Termiflange termite mesh collars were cut, secured and embedded across the concrete ground slab.

The creation of several blockouts following the removal of the tower crane bases across the site raised concerns for Built Environs, in that these areas may be overlooked for termite management. Prior to backfilling, the Termimesh System was installed in these areas to ensure continuity across the project.

Results

Installation of the Termimesh System in the new Acute Services Building will provide the structure with protection against concealed termite entry for its entire practical life, while eliminating the ongoing need for poisonous and hazardous chemical applications to maintain protection.

These poison-free attributes, coupled with the unique warranty terms of the Pledge Guarantee, make the Termimesh System the preferred termite barrier for specification and installation in hospitals, schools and other government infrastructure projects across Australia, where long-term asset performance and risk minimisation are critical.
