Termi Home & Commercial Central Queensland has entered a new chapter, with Monty and Alina Fitzgerald taking over ownership and operations of our Yeppoon-based franchise, which services Rockhampton and surrounding towns across Central Queensland.

The Fitzgeralds have deep roots in regional Queensland and decades of experience in the pest control industry. We caught up with them to learn more about their journey to becoming one of our newest franchisees.

Locals from regional Queensland

Monty and Alina’s time within the pest management industry has seen them travel right across regional Queensland, with the couple previously operating a business that specialised in pest control for the mining industry. Long before this, Monty lived in Toowoomba, relocating to Monto, four and a half hours north, to pursue a trainee forestry overseer position with the Queensland Government. However, this career path wasn’t meant to be.

After accepting a senior role and moving to Rockhampton, he moved once again. This time to Clermont for a position with a local pest control company, which is where his career in the pest industry officially kicked off. As a pest control technician for the company, he travelled extensively. The work involved extensive travel all around Queensland, from outside Cairns, out to Julia Creek and Camooweal near the Northern Territory border, down to Birdsville, across to St George and Roma and everywhere in between.”

Further reflecting on this position, Monty remarked, “It was a very enjoyable job and took me to some of the largest properties in Australia. Often, we would camp in accommodation on the property. Some properties were so big that we would spend two or three days on one property. They had gigantic, beautiful mansions and as many as 15 other residents on the same property. We would sometimes drive two hours to get from one worker’s house to another without even leaving the property.”

After years of meeting amazing people and visiting equally amazing locations, Monty packed up and moved his family to Moranbah to begin their next chapter. Little did they know, but this move would set the couple up as future business owners and long-term champions of the pest control industry.

This new position plunged Monty headfirst into the world of pest control for the mining industry, taking him to mine sites across Queensland. After several years with the company, the owners decided to retire, jumping in their Winnebago to set off around Australia. Monty and Alina were presented with the opportunity to purchase the business. They took the leap and business boomed during their 13 years of ownership, with the team providing pest control to over 35 mine sites across the Bowen Basin.

The business expanded rapidly under their leadership, and it didn’t go unnoticed. A call was received one day out of the blue about acquiring the business. Monty and Alina seized the opportunity, with Monty stating that: “Two years prior (to the sale), we had moved to the coastal town of Yeppoon and each week I would leave before the sun was up to travel out and work the week.”

By this time in his career, Monty had truly been bitten by the pest control bug… no pun intended! After the sale of the business, he longed to return to the industry that treated him so well.

Joining the Termi Home & Commercial family by purchasing our Central Queensland franchise based in Yeppoon was the perfect opportunity. With the paperwork finalised in mid 2025, Monty and Alina became the new franchise owners, allowing them to bring their experience back to the region they now call home. For Monty, this also meant not having to leave before the sun was up!

Joining the Termi Home & Commercial network

For Monty and Alina, joining the Termi Home & Commercial network was a natural next step. Having worked across some of Queensland’s highest termite-risk regions, Monty was already familiar with the Termimesh System and its reputation within the industry.

Reflecting on the decision to join the Termi Home & Commercial network, Monty said Termimesh has always been known as the highest level of pre-construction termite protection. Having always aimed to provide the highest level of service, when I saw the Termi Home & Commercial franchise in Yeppoon become available, it felt like the right fit.”

They now become part of this enduring reputation, as Termi Home & Commercial continues to provide the industry-leading Termimesh System, along with termite treatments, pest control and waterproofing solutions to customers across Central Queensland.

Returning to the pest control industry

Monty and Alina’s experience in the pest control industry and in operating a successful business has allowed them to hit the ground running with Termi Home & Commercial. Long-serving team members, including Kelly, have remained with the franchise, helping make this transition so smooth most customers would likely have not even noticed the change.

Upskilling the team over the next 12 months to keep pace with increased housing and construction activity across the region is Monty’s primary focus moving forward, helping ensure service standards are maintained as demand grows.

The dangers of termites in Central Queensland

With over a decade of experience dealing with termites, Monty truly understands how big an issue they are in Central Queensland and throughout the state. Termites cause absolute havoc in Rockhampton, along the Capricorn Coast and across surrounding regions, leading Monty to continue his mission of safeguarding people and properties from these destructive pests.

Warm temperatures, seasonal rainfall and periods of high humidity, particularly through summer, are all factors that contribute to high levels of termite activity, with risk further being increased by favourable termite habitats and a high density of timber structures throughout the region

Large parts of Central Queensland are within moderate to high termite risk zones, while areas closer to the coast experience very high levels of activity, making regular termite inspections an essential requirement for property owners.

Monty and his team at Termi Home & Commercial provide both annual termite inspections and pre-purchase timber pest inspections, which are critical to identify termite activity and prevent damage. A professional termite inspection should be conducted every 6 to 12 months, with properties located above the Tropic of Capricorn recommended to have multiple inspections per year.

For new builds in Central Queensland, incorporating a physical termite management system during construction, such as the Termimesh System, should be strongly considered as part of an overall termite management strategy.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Are termites more common in Rockhampton than other parts of Queensland?

A. No. Along the Queensland coast, many towns and cities experience very similar levels of termite activity to Rockhampton. The environmental conditions in these areas allow termites to thrive more compared to inland areas of the state.

Q. How often should my home be inspected for termites in Rockhampton?

A. In Rockhampton, most homes should have a professional termite inspection every 6 to 12 months. Properties that have had previous termite activity, or that are located above the Tropic of Capricorn, should have termite inspections on a more frequent basis.

Q. Why is Central Queensland considered a high-risk termite area?

A. Central Queensland is a high-risk area for termites due to its warm conditions, high humidity and seasonal rainfall that creates an ideal environment for termites to thrive and remain active for much of the year.

Q. Does the Rockhampton team provide pre-purchase termite inspections?

A. Yes. Termi Home & Commercial Central Queensland provides pre-purchase termite inspections for both residential and commercial properties located in Rockhampton and across Central Queensland.

Q. What is the best type of termite barrier for new homes in Rockhampton?

A. For new homes in Rockhampton, a physical termite management system installed during construction, such as the Termimesh System, should be strongly considered. Termimesh creates a physical barrier that stops termites without using any poison and protects structures for their entire practical life.
