Truth be told, termite management systems are not on the radar for most people when building a new home. So, it is not surprising they don’t realise it’s possible to choose the termite barrier that goes into their home.

For those people who care about protecting their home from termites without using poison, upgrading from the basic standard inclusion provided for termite management is a must.

If you have taken the extra step to do some research, you’ve probably got a few options in mind. You may have even decided that the Termimesh System is the right termite barrier for you.

The question then becomes: How do I actually get Termimesh in my home?

Keep reading to find out how.

Why it’s important to choose a termite management system that suits you

Choosing the right termite management system is an important decision because once it’s installed in your new home, it cannot be changed. So, it’s worth giving some thought to which system works best for you.

You may say: “Big deal, I’ll have to live with plenty of other things I cannot change, too.”

And that’s fair enough.

However, if you’re the type of person who doesn’t want to deal with the hassle of ongoing chemical retreatments to stop termites, then considering a physical termite barrier system is a must.

There are many different termite management systems available to Australian homeowners, each with different benefits and drawbacks. If you aren’t familiar with them, read our guide on termite management systems to understand everything you need to know.

How termite barriers are selected in new home builds

Unless you’ve built a new home before, you are probably unaware that a termite barrier is even included in your contract, but by default, a standard inclusion for termite management must be provided to meet legal requirements.

Standard inclusions are features included in the building contract for your new home that may be upgraded to other options at an additional cost (e.g. benchtops, tiles, tapware). Some builders may not explain this clearly, so often, inexperienced clients don’t know they have choices.

If you want to make sure you get exactly what you want in your new home, spend some time researching the different options available for each inclusion, even if upgrade options aren’t presented by your builder.

The standard inclusion for termite management that most builders provide is usually a chemical based system, but you may be lucky enough to have chosen a builder who installs Termimesh as part of their standard contract.

Once your contract has been finalised and construction begins, changing the termite barrier becomes very difficult, if not impossible. We recommend getting very clear on which optional upgrades are possible and which are not. Do your research and ask questions.

Important: Builders are legally required to have a termite management system installed in all new homes they build. If you are unsure of what system your builder includes as standard, you can ask them to clarify.

How do I make sure Termimesh is actually included in my build?

If you’ve decided that our Termimesh System is the right choice for your home, the next step is to make sure it becomes part of your build. The first step is to check which termite management system is included in your building contract as a standard inclusion.

You may already have Termimesh as the preferred system. In which case, there is nothing further to do.

Note: Some builders may offer a partial installation of the Termimesh system, where stainless steel mesh collars are fitted around service pipes, while a different system is used to protect the rest of the home. If you’d prefer a full installation of Termimesh, let your builder know before finalising your contract.

Your builder offers the Termimesh System as an upgrade

Builders may provide the Termimesh System as an optional upgrade to their standard termite management inclusion for an extra cost. If so, select this option instead of the standard inclusion offered.

You request the Termimesh System to be installed

If your builder doesn’t offer the Termimesh System as a standard inclusion or upgrade, you can request it when you select your inclusions. This method is the most common way homeowners get the Termimesh System installed in their new home.

We recommend asking for a quote on any upgrades you choose to ensure they fit into your budget.

Tip: Be specific and ask for the Termimesh System by name. Termimesh is the only mesh termite barrier system on the market that is manufactured from TMA725 stainless steel and backed by the Pledge Guarantee.

Designing a bespoke home with an architect

If you are commissioning an architect to design your home, you can request the Termimesh System to be included in your build. Your architect will then incorporate it into their design plans and work with your preferred builder to have it installed.

Architects often recommend Termimesh to their clients, as the system is environmentally friendly, poison-free and easy to maintain.

Conclusion

Termite management is a crucial part of every new home, and you only get one opportunity to choose the system that will protect it from termites for life. If you want to make sure you have the best termite barrier installed in your home, you need to make sure it is included in your contract.

While a termite barrier will be included by default, the system that goes into your home and how it performs over the long term is ultimately your decision. Developing a good relationship with your builder and asking the right questions will help you make an informed decision about termite management.

If you’ve decided that the Termimesh System is the best option to protect your new home from termites and you want it installed, you will need to figure out which step you need to take to make sure it’s included. If in doubt, ask for the Termimesh System by name and have your builder write it into your contract to make sure your new home will be protected by Australia’s original termite mesh barrier.

Frequently asked questions

Q. When do I get to choose which termite management system my home receives?

A. In most cases, choosing which termite management system that will be installed into your home happens during the inclusion selection process or contract stage before construction begins.

A termite management system must be automatically included as part of your build. However, you can upgrade to an alternative system if you wish.

Q. Do I need to contact Termimesh directly to have it installed?

A. No, you won’t need to contact Termimesh directly to have the system installed in your new home.

Once you’ve confirmed that the Termimesh System will be used to protect your home, your builder will coordinate the quote and installation process with your nearest Termi Home & Commercial centre.

Q. Will my builder automatically include Termimesh?

A. Most builders don’t automatically include the Termimesh System as their standard inclusion for termite management. However, they may offer it as an upgrade at an additional cost.

If you would like the Termimesh System installed in your home, it’s best to be specific and ask for it by name, then confirm it has been included before finalising your contract.

Q. Can I get Termimesh installed in my home after it has been built?

A. Retrofitting the Termimesh System into a home after it has been built would be a prohibitively expensive exercise, as major construction works are required to install the system correctly.

In some cases, it may be possible to integrate Termimesh into extension works if construction methods allow the system to be installed as intended.

Q. Do I need to buy Termimesh myself and give it to my builder?

A. No. Termimesh will be sourced directly through your builder. Once the upgrade to Termimesh is confirmed, your builder will coordinate the installation with your local Termi Home & Commercial team.
